Tropical Storms/Hurricanes over SoCal

Tropical storms or hurricanes are an extremely rare event over southern California. Many form in the eastern Pacific Ocean off the west coast/Baja area of Mexico and generally move northwestward. They weaken rapidly as they move over the cooler waters of the California Current.

Ironically the only recorded Hurricane (Category 1) to hit the west coast was in San Diego back in October 1858. Strong winds followed by heavy rain caused extensive damage to the tiny town of San Diego.

In more recent times, a tropical storm hit Long Beach in September 1939. People were caught unprepared by the storm with 45 deaths at sea and 48 deaths on land. Los Angeles recorded 5.66 inches of rain and Mt. Wilson 11.64 inches.
