Fashion • It’s time for the Sundance Film Festival (Jan 20th-30th), where you can always count on good films and cold weather. We asked some Park City fashion experts for advice on how to stay warm but still look hot.
Hats • Spirit Hoods, animal-inspired fur hats with attached scarves and mittens, are in high demand this year, says Lori Harris, owner of Mary Jane’s. Fur trapper hats, fedoras and cabbie hats also are popular.
Scarf • This is an accessory that can really show off your style and draw attention to the face, a must when you are covered up everywhere else. Animal prints or bold patterns will stand out against a neutral-colored coat. A vibrant color will add interest to an evening look.
Coat • Fur coats in all varieties will be a Sundance staple. You’ll also see puffy coats belted at the waist with high collars. Traditional tailored jackets, wool trenches and military-style pea coats also will keep moviegoers warm. Classic neutral colors of black, gray and camel are the trend, but Somer Gardiner, owner of Olive and Tweed, says if you’re in the market for a new coat, choose plaids or bright colors, such as burnt orange, red or purple. They make a style statement and show some personality.
Gloves • Stock up on several pair, as they are easy to misplace. Vintage-inspired long gloves, cozy cable-knit mittens, rock-diva wrist warmers or leather driving gloves keep fingertips functioning. But there will be plenty of fingerless gloves for easy texting and tweeting.
Boots • This year, just about everything goes: over-the-knee boots, ankle booties, lace-up combat boots, insulated snow boots and furry outerwear boots. To prevent sliding on icy sidewalks, pick a pair with a midsize or wedge heel and good treads on the bottom. Harris suggests the Moon Boot. “It’s the 40th anniversary of these outrageously bright and warm boots. Great for standing in the wait-list line at Sundance.”
